The Outlook on Health & Wellness

Written by: Kayla Deighan, DPT. Owner and Physical Therapist at Roots Rehab

A couple of common questions I receive are: Do I need to be referred by my doctor? Or do I need to be injured to come to physical therapy? For me, I have seen many patients come with concerns about their balance, strength, physical fitness, and ability to perform daily activities. Whether you want to pick up your grandkids, or have a concern about falling, physical therapy can be a great resource to address these issues before they create an injury or cause further deficits. A common theme with insurance is that it needs to be “medically necessary”, so an evaluation will determine what deficits are present, and then it is up to the provider/PT to prove medical necessity through our documentation. Safety is a big reason I see people, and that is absolutely a valid reason to go to PT. There are some insurance plans that require a doctor’s referral, but in my experience if you are wanting to work on your health and wellness most doctors will be on board. There are instances where I’ve seen people that don’t regularly follow up with a primary care doctor, or prefer to go to urgent care if needing medical attention. Those doctors would be able to send a referral, or I can recommend people who take walk ins and would be appropriate based on your needs.

I know some physical therapy clinics choose to take cash only, because that eliminates insurance companies’ control. Although that is tempting, I wanted to be in-network with most insurance plans to be able to take advantage of the benefits you are paying for. I know health coverage can be confusing, so I am here to walk with you through the process of discussing benefits, and deciding what length of care would be best suited for your condition and finances. When it comes to starting PT it can be quite easy, just call or schedule online and we can get you started! I am working hard to remove barriers to getting care, and emphasize strong communication with other health professionals, so you can feel stronger, better, and more confident as quickly as possible. Whether you need balance training, manual therapy techniques, or education on form with exercises, there is an individualized program for everyone. Your goals and impairments largely dictate how much and what type of therapy techniques will be used. I am very open to feedback, and want to work as a team to reach your goals!

If you are curious about physical therapy but don’t know if you are ready to begin, I provide free 10-minute consultations to discuss what therapy could look like, or if a referral to another provider may be more appropriate. Roots Rehab also offers cash pay for PT services if we are out-of-network with your insurance, or you don’t carry health insurance. Finally, there are cash packages to save money on services not covered by insurance, such as dry needling, compression therapy, and recovery sessions following sports events. Please reach out or check out our website for more services and information! There are many approaches to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and hopefully PT can better equip you to feel your best and maintain the lifestyle you enjoy.
